When It Comes To Big Reputation Scottish Salmon Fishing Beats The River Tay’s Famous Stobhall Beat Is Easily One Of The Most Renowned.

The lower River Tay has indeed some of the biggest names in Scottish salmon fishing and with 29 named pools and positioned downstream of the highly productive Tay tributary River Isla it is no wonder why Stobhall is so prolific.

This stunning lower Tay salmon beat shares its magnificent water on a daily rotational basis with the equally famous Taymount beat. World renowned salmon holding pools like the 'Linn', 'Stank End', 'Kill Mou' & 'The Major’s Cast' pools resonate with Tay salmon fishing folklore in its most potent form.

The scenery on this wonderful River Tay salmon beat is also in a class of its own with historic buildings such as Stobhall Castle and Taymount House set close to the river with beautiful native woodlands which shroud Stobhall's well maintained riverbanks.

The Stobhall beat’s Head Ghillie Bob Campbell is a 'legend' on the Tay and has served all his life on the river. Ernie Duff who is also a long standing full time professional has close to 3 decades of Stobhall experience too. If you’re looking for 2 seasoned River Tay ghillie professionals this highly astute combination couldn’t be bettered.

Many heavyweight Tay salmon are caught on Stobhall each year and this is another Tay beat where you’ve a really good chance of getting your fly or lure in front of one of these specimen Tay fish.

With so many quality salmon pools there also comes the choice of fishing methods and on Stobhall there’s classic fly fishing streams along with deeper slower moving pools which lend themselves perfectly for a well presented lure.

Bob & Ernie work the 2 Stobhall boats on a daily basis and use of these boats are rotated throughout the 6 fishing guests each day for those who wish the boat & professional boatman built in as part of their fishing day plans.

The Upper & Lower Stobhall beat rotation for 2017 targets the Lower Beat on Monday, Wednesday & Friday and the Upper Beat on Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday. Both beats have beautifully appointed & well maintained salmon fishing huts.

Jock's Appraisal

There are certain salmon fishing venues in Scotland that when you slip into your waders at the start of the fishing day you also slip into a magical salmon beat vibe that will make your senses & anticipations levels come 'alive'.

Stobhall is something unique as are the two professional Tay boatmen who extend perfect hospitality and astute salmon beat fishing knowledge & advice to all visiting fishing guests.

If ever there was a natural stopper for running salmon on the River Tay then Stobhall's famous 'Linn Pool' has to be ranked number one.

Many salmon hold up in this historic River Tay beat from the Spring right through to the last fishing days in October making this famous beat a hugely attractive proposition to all salmon fishers.

I've no doubt that 2017 will be yet another excellent season for this classic lower Tay salmon beat and that many new and returning Stobhall fishers will be put under its beautifully 'captivating' spell.

Catch Statistics

Please bare in mind that 'catch statistics' in recent years have become an industry driver but they do not take into account the actual 'rod pressure' applied in achieving these figures.

There's much more to Scottish salmon fishing than the inevitable 'end result' of enough fishers being present or being in the right place at the right time.

The riverbank beauty & ambiance, the hypnotic flow of the stream, the hospitality of the ghillie and just enjoying 'the escape' from normal stressful work duties has always been the primary attraction of Scottish salmon fishing where a salmon was always regarded as a bonus.
