The Famous Pitlochrie Beat Of The River Tay Is Located Close To The Village Of Stanley Which Is 6 Miles Upstream Of The Tidal Water At Perth.

The river directly downstream of this area of the valley is wide and fairly featureless permitting running salmon an easy swim to this beat where significant ecological changes force salmon to stop as the river flows over elevated rock bases which create narrow pool necks and excellent salmon holding areas.

The Pitlochrie beat has all the classic meandering salmon river features you'd expect from a top quality River Tay salmon fishing venue and is located close to the popular salmon fishers village of Stanley.

This beat is fished on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays during the 2017 salmon fishing season and has fished very well in recent Spring & Autumn months but seldom is fished through the Summer months which is by no means a reflection of whether salmon are present or not.

The Pitlochrie Beat has thirteen named pools which create fishing options through all the varying water levels. It’s stone built heated fishing bothy is positioned slightly upstream from the historic Stanley Mills building.

This year another highly experienced River Tay ghillie Gordon Pollock has joined forces with the Head Ghillie Bob White on Pitlochrie which creates a 'dynamic combination' of both technical salmon fishing mastery and decades of fully grounded River Tay salmon fishing experience.

Jock's Appraisal

Having carefully studied all the various pools on this lovely River Tay salmon beat I see a huge potential for the Pitochrie Beat to build its catches and client base due to it’s magnificent salmon pool holding qualities.

From a fly fishing point of view this highly scenic lower Tay salmon beat has some beautiful pools and streams that just scream for good fly coverage. One of my guided clients in 2016 landed 5 salmon on the fly on this beat over 2 days last Summer.

When the river warms during late Spring & the through the Summer months pay particular attention to the 'high tide' times at Perth.

If you're on Pitlochrie 2 hours before and up to 3 hours after 'high tide' you'll most definitely have a chance of catching running sea-liced salmon especially now that all East coast commercial netting has ceased

The recent appointment of a second professional full time ghillie brings additional expertise to the beat which I have no doubt will result in this beautiful beat being an excellent prospect for both new & returning River Tay salmon fishers.

Catch Statistics

Please keep in mind that 'catch statistics' in recent years have unfortunately become the main industry driver but they do not take into account the many relevant fishing pressure factors involved in producing these figures. There's much more to Scottish salmon fishing than the inevitable 'end result' of enough fishers being present or being in the right place at the right time. The riverbank beauty & ambiance, the hypnotic flow of the stream, the hospitality of the ghillie and just enjoying 'the escape' from normal stressful work duties has always been the primary attraction of Scottish salmon fishing where a salmon was always regarded as a bonus.
