Where do I begin with this lovely River Tay salmon beat! The famous Newtyle Beat became part of my own personal DNA back in 1970 when I caught my first ever salmon under the guidance of legendary Tay Ghillie Willie Laird.
I went on to serve as head ghillie on Newtyle and I have many great memories with hopefully many more to follow. The Newtyle Beat is located in the middle area of the valley just downstream of Dunkeld & Birnam. This beat has it all for the salmon fisher with many great holding pools that suit both fly and spin fishing.
The riverbank terrain in this area of the Tay Valley creates easy wading in most of the Newtyle Beat’s 12 named salmon pools which have perfect natural holding areas for salmon during most water levels. Newtyle has gone from strength to strength over recent decades and hundreds of dedicated Tay salmon fishers return to its natural beauty each year and its prominent 100 year old Victorian red, white & blue fishing hut.
This beat fishes well throughout the entire River Tay salmon fishing season and there’s always salmon present in this productive beat in various pool locations. Head Ghillie & expert salmon fisher David Gardner does an excellent job of keeping the beat in tip top shape and making sure his fishers are always focussed on the best fishing areas.
