The Famous Dunkeld House Beat Of The River Tay Is Located Close To The Town Of Dunkeld Which Is 16 Miles Above The Tidal Water At Perth.

If ever there was a true ‘holding’ beat for salmon on the middle Tay then this renowned deep pooled venue is definitely in the contention for the award. Dunkeld House is one of the very few Tay beats that can more or less guarantee a fresh Spring salmon on the Tay’s January opening day each year such is its attraction for resting fish.

With 17 named pools that suit both fly fishing, spinning and an additional tactical boat approach it’s easy to understand why this beat is so popular with visiting River Tay salmon fishers. Add in the beautiful mature native wooded riverbanks and an abundance of wild life plus the distant chimes from the bells at the downstream Dunkeld Cathedral and you’ll start to appreciate the true beauty of this wonderful salmon beat.

Salmon of 30lbs have been landed on Dunkeld House in recent years and in the month of May of 2014 76 Spring salmon were caught which proves what I mentioned about this particular Tay beat’s salmon holding qualities.

The alluring and majestic sight of the 200 year old Telford Bridge in Dunkeld always sets my mind racing with thoughts of how many seriously heavyweight Tay salmon have navigated under its arches during the last two centuries.

Jock's Appraisal

Having personally fished this superb beat over the last 20 years I can 'hand on heart' say that there’s never a day of the River Tay fishing season that passes that salmon cannot be caught here for the simple reason they are alway present from January to October.

I vividly recall a beautiful sea liced 20 pounder at the the ‘Gauge Tree’ pool in March of 2001 that ran me completely ragged before eventually being coaxed to the net and that is the type of cemented fishing memory you’re likely to enjoy from fishing this middle Tay beat.

As a ghillie I’m confident when I say that this beat is a true ‘half way house’ for running salmon that are heading for Loch Tay and beyond as by the time they've pressed their noses to the fast streams prior to arriving in the relaxed pool flows of this beat they are indeed ready for a breather.

I have no doubt that 2017 will be a very good fishing season for all new & returning Dunkeld House salmon fishers.

Catch Statistics

Please keep in mind that 'catch statistics' in recent years have unfortunately become the main industry driver but they do not take into account the many relevant fishing pressure factors involved in producing these figures. There's much more to Scottish salmon fishing than the inevitable 'end result' of enough fishers being present or being in the right place at the right time. The riverbank beauty & ambiance, the hypnotic flow of the stream, the hospitality of the ghillie and just enjoying 'the escape' from normal stressful work duties has always been the primary attraction of Scottish salmon fishing where a salmon was always regarded as a bonus.

Beat Directions

Travelling From The North (Pitlochry); Stay on the A9 south (signposted Perth) until you pass over the A9 Tay road bridge north of Dunkeld. Take the first Dunkeld exit on your left hand side which will lead you onto the Telford River Tay Bridge in Dunkeld. Drive straight through the town until you pass a large carpark on your left hand side. 100 yards after the car park turn left through the stone arches signposted Dunkeld House Hotel. Follow this narrow road until the hotel is in sight. At that point you'll see a left hand track (marked with a fish sign) that immediately turns right in an upstream direction along the riverbank. This track will bring you straight to the Dunkeld House beat's fishing hut which is located between the hotel and the river.
